10 Tips for Fish Feeding

Feeding your fish in just the right way can be finicky. Whether you’ve just gotten started with your fish, or are looking to make a change, here are my 10 tips to keep your fish happy and healthy!

#1 All fish need food. Make sure everybody in the tank gets their share. You can feed the more daring fish from the front of your tank, and maybe help the shy ones over in the corner.

#2 Fish treats? Some guides may tell you you should give your fish live food no matter what. This ain’t one of ‘em! However, do try to include a good varied diet for your fish. (#3) Maybe instead try some freeze-dried bloodworms!

#3 Give your fish a good diet! How would you like to eat the same type of food every single day? I personally have a main flake food, side flake food, and freeze-dried bloodworms, and everybody seems to be liking it!

A pile of freeze-dried bloodworms. I recommend these to anybody looking to vary their fish’s diet.

#4 Fish aren’t goats. No leftovers. This should go without saying.

#5 Keep a schedule. Fish like being organized, too! Try to find the optimal times to feed your fish 2-3 times a day. If you just got new fish, try to find their preferred cycle.

#6 Don’t overfeed. This one might sound a little silly, especially if you have a larger tank with more fish, but only feed your fish the amount they can fully consume in 2-3 minutes. If you’re worried some of your fish aren’t getting enough, read #1.

#7 What food to choose? When you get new fish, your first response may be just to research whatever type of food the fish you got might like. And sometimes this works. But more than often, if you ask a store employee, they will likely be able to help you find the food they are already using for the fish.

#8 What types to use? Once you’ve done #3, you might be wondering when to feed your fish the diet you chose. I usually feed my fish bloodworms or treats every other day, the main flake food every day, and the side flake food every other meal or so.

#9 Vegetarian? Some guides may have told you that a type of fish you own is a herbivore. Honestly, if your fish seemed to be doing fine without veggies, then you don’t really need to change its diet. However, if you are buying new fish and want to be sure, ask an employee about what they feed them. If you’re still unsure, research!

#10 Listen to your fish! If your fish don’t seem to be digging the type of food you tried, make some adjustments until you find what suits them best.

Happy Fishkeeping!
